# Multi-Role Queue

Multi-Role Queue lets players pick up to **2 roles** they're willing to play instead of committing to one role the instant they click a button. Nobody's role locks in while the queue waits - the bot works out the fairest way to fill every role only once the queue is full.

This is a sub-mode of [Ranked](/docs/commands/game-modes.md#ranked) - it isn't available for Casual, Rosters, or Captain, since those modes either have no roles or already have their own way of assigning them.

### Key Features

* **Pick up to 2 roles**: enough flexibility to help fill a queue, without letting one very flexible player hide a real shortage in a specific role.
* **Nothing locks in while you wait**: change your picks as many times as you like before the queue fills - just use the dropdown again.
* **Fair, automatic assignment**: when the queue fills, InHouseQueue assigns every role in one go, giving priority to players with fewer role options first.
* **"Still needed" list**: the queue message tells you exactly which roles still need players, so nobody has to guess.
* **MMR is untouched**: team balancing still runs exactly as normal once roles are assigned - this only changes how players pick their role, not how teams are formed.

{% hint style="info" %}
While Multi-Role is on, the **Fill** button isn't offered. Fill means "any role", which would let a very flexible player mask a real shortage - the 2-role cap is what keeps that shortage visible.
{% endhint %}

### How it Works

1. Turn Ranked mode on first if it isn't already, then enable Multi-Role with `/queue multi_role true`. You can also flip it on straight from the queue message - see below.

<div align="left"><figure><img src="https://1130318129-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FwcHfLjgS9hMDSoOpDEDo%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-7e6020d54f24bdc66c52f7e41b13b4a4d5dc2f97%2Fmulti_role_1.png?alt=media" alt=""><figcaption><p>/queue multi_role true</p></figcaption></figure></div>

2. The queue message swaps its row of single-role buttons for a dropdown. Players select up to 2 roles they're willing to play.

<div align="left"><figure><img src="https://1130318129-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FwcHfLjgS9hMDSoOpDEDo%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-5975c4cceca83c4279c8b4e88f325a8cfb223e56%2Fmulti_role_2.png?alt=media" alt=""><figcaption><p>Picking roles from the dropdown</p></figcaption></figure></div>

3. While the queue waits, each player's picks are shown next to their name (e.g. `Top / Support`), and a **Still needed** line lists the roles that still need a player.

<div align="left"><figure><img src="https://1130318129-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FwcHfLjgS9hMDSoOpDEDo%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-8757982cc6cdc56c7a8cedc6d5e5a255dfcbd49b%2Fmulti_role_3.png?alt=media" alt=""><figcaption><p>Picks and "Still needed" shown on the queue message</p></figcaption></figure></div>

4. A player can reopen the dropdown at any time before the queue fills to change their picks - their spot in the queue doesn't move.
5. Once the queue is full, InHouseQueue assigns every player to a role in one pass - players with fewer role options are placed first, so a player who can only play one role never loses out to someone more flexible. From here on, everything works exactly as a normal Ranked queue: MMR-based team balancing, ready up, and match start.

{% hint style="warning" %}
Multi-Role needs one role label per player slot on that queue (e.g. 5 roles for a 5v5). If a game's role labels don't match its team size, the queue falls back to ordinary role buttons instead.
{% endhint %}

### Locking a queue to Multi-Role specifically

Multi-Role can also be locked to a single queue channel, the same way you'd lock a queue to any other [game mode](/docs/commands/game-modes.md) - see [Lock a Queue to a Game mode](/docs/commands/queue-commands.md#lock-a-queue-to-a-game-mode). Pick **Multi-Role** from the mode list, either from the `/queue mode` command or the Manage Queue button's **Change Game Mode** option.

<div align="left"><figure><img src="https://1130318129-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FwcHfLjgS9hMDSoOpDEDo%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-5b921c526e8220fdcf6282d87af9ebe580983ef9%2Fmulti_role_4.png?alt=media" alt=""><figcaption><p>Locking one queue to Multi-Role mode</p></figcaption></figure></div>

A queue locked to Multi-Role shows **🔀 Multi-Role Mode** in its header, with a padlock if it's locked. Locking a queue to plain Ranked always keeps the ordinary role buttons, even if Multi-Role is your server's default - an explicit lock always wins over the server default.
